Is Bone-Dry Sawdust Necessary for Biomass Pellets?
A common misconception in producing biomass pellets is that the raw material must be extremely dry. While correct moisture control is indeed one of the most critical factors for success, the key is to achieve an optimal range, not the lowest possible level. For high-quality biomass pellets, the ideal moisture content for the raw material typically falls between 10% and 15%.
The science behind this "Goldilocks zone" revolves around lignin, a natural polymer found in wood. During the pelletizing process, the biomass pellets are formed under high pressure and temperature inside the pellet mill. When the moisture content is within the 10-15% range, this heat softens the lignin, allowing it to act as a natural binder. It becomes plastic and fuses the wood particles together, creating strong and durable biomass pellets. If the sawdust is too dry (below 8%), there is not enough moisture to activate the lignin's binding properties. The particles will not stick together properly, resulting in crumbly, weak biomass pellets that generate excessive dust and break easily during handling and transport.
Conversely, using overly wet sawdust (above 20%) is also detrimental. The excess water prevents proper compaction and creates steam within the die, leading to soft, expanding pellets that often fall apart. Furthermore, it forces the machine to work harder, increasing energy consumption and the risk of corrosion. Therefore, producing premium biomass pellets is not about using the driest sawdust possible, but about precisely controlling the moisture to harness the power of nature's own glue.
